Mole, it’s all in the glory

I have learned about the applications of the mole, that it is used in almost all parts of chemistry. From percent composition, to gas laws, to stoichiometry. I was surprised and expectant of the same thing, oddly enough, the sheer size of a mole. I was expecting it to be large, given the diminutive size of an atom. But a mole has 23 0’s….. 23!!! A person could have a mole of dollars, spend a million dollars a day and still die a Rockefeller. So, mind blow. It seems common sense to me how useful it is, putting atoms on a workable scale was a terrific achievement. It’s unfortunate that avagadro’s colleagues didn’t understand the importance in that until after he was dead. And now, chemistry cat.

Recently, i have learned about gas laws and their implications in industry as well as their applications
I have recently completed a worksheet on gas laws.
Next, i plan on working on gas laws further, bringing my grade up, and resuming work on my chess set.


As one could surmise, airbags are sacks of gas, but complicated ones. an airbag is pre packaged and folded up in the steering wheel of the car, and when an accident is detected, a small explosive (sodium azide) is detonated, which produces large amounts of nitrogen gas. Given avagadro’s law on the relationship between moles of a gas and the volume of a gas, the bag inflates fully because of the direct relationship. the bag then immediately begins to deflate, in order to lessen the impact on the driver. Image

Water pressure lab explore

today, we were introduced to gas laws using water and jars. Gas is different than other states of matter because it has no definite shape or volume, and it will expand. in our lab, we used a stopped jar with a funnel and tubing. as we added water to the jar down the tubing, the pressure increased in the jar, and the flow of water slowed as we added more water because of this. there were multiple trials in this experiment, changing the height of the funnel for each measure. The higher funnel had a higher final volume, and the smaller had a smaller final volume. the difference is simply due to the change in height, the tall had all of the water pushing down, instead of being pushed through a multitude of curves and turns. the elevated funnel has more water pressure because it is pulled down, and this water pressure pushes more water into the jar against the air pressure already present inside of the jar. This was demonstrated during a bit of a lab snafu as my teacher lifted the jar from the ground, unaware that there was no clamp on the tube, the pressure in the jar, when raised created a syphon and pushed the water out of the funnel. the main lesson of the lab seems to be that pressure is just the amount of something in a container, and the more stuff in a container or and area, the higher the pressure. vis a vis, as we added more water to the jar, (particles) the pressure increased. Image

Recently, i have completed the unit 4 test for chemistry, and the first showing of alice in wonderland.
Recently, i have learned how to neutralize and identify the molarity of solutions using titration.
Next, i plan on desperately attempting to raise my grades to an A. And study for my final exams

Who cares about titration?

in class, we performed a titration of NaOH and HCL, using an indicator to see the amount of HCL in order to neutralize the NaOH. This practice can be used in industry in order to find the concentrations of certain components of a product simply by using the amounts and molarities of one substance to calculate the molarity of another. for example, if someone needed to find the amount of magnesium bicarbonate in a antacid tablet, one would make a solution with the tablet, and given that magnesium bicarbonate is a base one would use an indicator and a 1 molar solution of an acid (perhaps HCl). One would then add acid to the solution until the indicator indicated neutrality. Then apply the amount of acid used to calculate the amount of magnesium bicarbonate.
Another application, Finding the amount of citric acid in a fruit juice could be accomplished by using a larger amount of indicator to show through the orange of the juice and using the same process, simply replacing the acid with a base. To find the molarity of an acid, use a base, and vise versa. Titration is a very valuable tool in industry.

“Cool reactions”

In the list of cool chemical reactions(, not all react, but they are all indeed cool. here, i will discuss the reactions and what happened in them, while giving the balanced equations of the chemical reactions. 

Number 10 is a combustion reaction of sodium and water (2Na +H2O–>2NaOH + 2H) which is reflected in chlorine gas. to produce the light

Number 9 is a combustion reaction of magnesium in frozen CO2 (2Mg+CO2–>2MgO+C) 

Number 8 is a combustion reaction which produces oxygen using the gummy bear as catalyst. (6KClO3 + C6H12O6 –> 6KCl + 6H2O + 6CO2 + 3O2.

Number 7 is not a chemical reaction, it is simply a physical change due to temperature. no formula change occurs.

Number 6 is not a reaction because it is just the physical solution of a solute, no formula change, no chemical change.

Number 5 is not a reaction because it is just the absorption of water, and solution is not a chemical change.

Number 4 is not a reaction in anyway, it is simply the physical properties of a given substance being exhibited. 

Number 3 is not a reaction because it simply describes a state of helium, not any chemical change to it.

Number 2 is a chemical reaction (combustion) of thermite being burned (oxidized) and does not react with the liquid nitrogen, which is simply dispersed/gimp slapped in the video. The equation cannot be found without knowing what kind of thermite is involved in the reaction, but it was cool!

Number 1 is a chemical reaction evidenced by color change, but is actually 2 different redox reactions starting with 5H2O2 + 2IO3- + 2H+ –> I2 + 5O2 + 6H2O turning the solution blue then the second reaction 5H2O2 + I2 –> IO3 + 2H + 4H2O turns the solution back to clear. 

My favorite chemical reaction in the list is the perchlorate deterioration, the combustion is intense and it is used by astronauts in order to produce emergency oxygen.

3. Next, i plan on putting on a great show for theatre and make up my lab (on monday as promised)
